Ron Rigsby Park Updates

IMPD 2011

It’s My Park Day on March 5th was a great success. The event was originally planned to be from 9a-11a but the day started off cool and rainy so we got a late start.  By the time we wrapped up festivities at 2pm, 21 people volunteered around 54 total hours.  It turned out to be a beautiful day.  Volunteers painted over the graffitti, replaced a redbud tree, pulled a bunch of weeds, spread 8 yards of mulch, and planted wildflower seeds.  Thank so much to everyone who volunteered!

TREE WORK COMING SOON

After the event we found several large fallen branches around the old mesquite tree.  The PARD Urban Forester came by to check and found two trees with severe damage from decay.  The Arizona Ash (near the trashcans) has to be completely removed and part of the mesquite tree will be removed as well.  The arborists will also do some pruning in the existing trees around the park starting after 3/21.  PARD Urban Forestry cares for over 300,000 trees in Austin parks.

NACN – April 26th Candidates Forum

You may notice this edition is running a little late and that is because we wanted to confirm the location for our next meeting.

Instead of an April meeting, NACN will be having a Candidate’s Forum at Lanier High School, in the cafeteria, from 7:00-8:30. Doors will open at 6:30. (This event is for North Austin, but is open to everybody in the City). As you can imagine, it has taken our volunteers a lot of hard work and time to get this event together and we need your help to make it a sucess.

Please help us spread the word! Tell your friends and neighbors that yes, local candidates will be in North Austin, talking to us about their stance on our concerns and issues. And talking about concerns and issues -

Its very important to all of us volunteers involved with NACN to allow our community to have a voice in this forum. We need to hear what your concerns and issues are, so we can ensure the candidates answer them. We have a survey and it will be up until March 20th:

https://app.icontact.com/icp/sub/survey/start?sid=1297&cid=176761

Please take the survey and then print this newsletter out, or hit the forward button. It only takes a few minutes to spread the word and we really appreciate it!

We continue to have some people say they cannot access the survey directly from our newsletters, so the link is also on our website in case the above link doesn’t work for you:

Second, we would like to welcome North Star Neighborhood! They’ve been registered as a neighborhood for a while, but they are having their second meeting this Saturday at 2pm. North Star runs just south of Parmer, next to the Lamplight APD Substation and we are glad to have them on board!

Finally, at the very bottom of this newsletter is a plea from Michael Fossum at the Austin Heritage Tree Foundation. After reading his plea, I decided to pass it along verbatim, because trees are literally the backbone of our city – they help clean the air, cool our streets and sidewalks and homes, and also do a lot to control flooding.
